Positioned on a ridge with panoramic views over the surrounding bushveld — one of the most scenic camp settings of any South African park. Full facilities: restaurant, bar, shop, petrol station, swimming pool. Self-catering chalets and rondavels with air conditioning. Hilltop is the best base for exploring the rhino-rich northern section of the park. Guided drives depart from Hilltop daily. Book well in advance for July–September peak season.
Mpila Camp (iMfolozi Section)
The main camp in the southern iMfolozi section — larger, wilder, and traditionally the centre of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi’s wilderness trail programme. More remote feeling than Hilltop. Self-catering; basic shop. Excellent for wildlife viewing in the white rhino-rich southern plains. Guided wilderness trails (walking safaris) depart from Mpila — the original walking safari destination in Africa.
Bush Camps and Satellite Facilities
The park also has smaller satellite camps (Muntulu, Gqoyeni, Masinda) which are more remote, smaller, and require self-catering provisioning. These offer the most intimate experience in the park — staying in basic but atmospheric bush camps surrounded by wildlife. Best for repeat visitors and those seeking a more remote wilderness feel.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is the birthplace of the African walking safari — Dr Ian Player established the first formal wilderness trails programme here in the 1950s as a vehicle for conservation education. Today, KZN Wildlife continues to offer multi-day wilderness trails in the iMfolozi wilderness area — walking with armed rangers in genuine, vehicle-free Big Five territory. These trails are exceptional and unlike anything else in South Africa outside Kruger’s own trail programme. Minimum age: 14 years.
